J.B. Schneewind's Sixty Years of Philosophy in a Life

In my senior year I had a graduate seminar with Brown on the British Moralists, another with Arthur Murphy on recent ethics, and a reading course, again with Murphy, on Kant. I studied history of philosophy and history of political thought with Gregory Vlastos. And I did logic and philosophy of language with Max Black. He was my advisor. I lived in dread of him. He was often cruel and cutting in his remarks to students. Nonetheless he was a most effective teacher. I learned far more about writing from him than the required writing course. I was not good at logic--not at all--but out of pure terror I did well even in Black's advanced logic class. I had occasional nightmares about him for the next twenty years.
